Reydon’s ‘Stars’ shine brightly
On 25th April, the annual ‘Reydon Star Awards’ were presented at Reydon Parish Council’s Annual Parish Meeting, for those individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the community of Reydon.
Chair of the Parish Council, Pam Cyprien said: “It’s a fact that the work of many volunteers does not get recognised, or the individuals do not get thanked for their often tireless work for the benefit of us all. So we hope these awards will not only recognise those, where recognition is due, but also encourage others to help when and where they can.”
Joining Pam to present the awards was local historian, author, and jewellery specialist on The Antiques Roadshow, Geoffrey Munn OBE.
The 2024 ‘Stars’ were awarded to:
FIONA TAYLOR: For her essential, tireless work for Reydon Parish Council, and as Deputy Chair.
PHILIP O’HEAR: For his assiduous work on the Reydon Neighbourhood Plan, LionLink and the Quiet Lanes.
BETTY HARMER: For many years work at St Margaret’s Church, Reydon, in particular managing all the burial and interment records.
NEIL HOLLOWAY: For his long service at St Margaret’s Church, Reydon and maintaining and expanding the graveyard.
BLYTH VALLEY ROTARY: For all their valuable work in Reydon, staging important local events, and enhancing the community.
STEVE WESTLAKE: For all his many years of help in the village, with wildlife and the coastal environment, particularly at Potters Bridge.
GEOFF COOPER: For years of generous help around the village, in particular with the WW1 Pillbox on Mights Bridge, Reydon.
KALVYN FRIEND: For over 20 years of fundraising for numerous local charities . . . researching and hosting quizzes.
THE VOLUNTARY HELP CENTRE: For their invaluable and continuing assistance to the community.
To conclude the awards presentation, Pam Cyprien said: “If you would like to nominate a member of our community for a ‘Reydon Star’ next year, please contact the Parish Clerk at reydon.pc@gmail.com. And it doesn’t have to stop there. If you think that any local group or individual is worthy of greater recognition and thanks, then there’s ‘The King’s Award for Volunteering’ for a group or team. It costs nothing.”
Before listening to the many accounts of the Parish Council’s year, the meeting also heard fascinating reports from Jamie Smith from Suffolk Wildlife Trust and Adam Burrows from Natural England.

Reydon Scarecrow Trail returns!
Reydon Scarecrow Trail returns this summer with an Olympic and Paralympic theme. The Trail, which raises much-needed funds for Reydon Christmas Lights, encourages local Reydon people to get creative and make a scarecrow for outside their home or business. Then on the second weekend of September, everyone is encouraged to visit the village, spot all the scarecrows and pick their favourite.
The Trail runs on Saturday, 14th and Sunday, 15th September 2024 from 10am until 5pm. Programmes can be purchased from Reydon Village Hall, Bridgefoot Stores, Little Jems and Boyden Stores. There will also be homemade refreshments throughout the weekend from Reydon Village Hall.
So, get your thinking caps on and sign up to make a scarecrow today! Scarecrows could be inspired by an Olympic or Paralympic sport, the attendees cheering them on, or the theatrics and fun of the occasion – no artistic talents required! Forms can be collected from Bridgefoot Stores, Boyden Stores, Little Jems and Southwold Library or can be emailed to you – just contact reydonscarecrowtrail@gmail.com.
Open Studio Trail 2024
For the ninth successive year, artists living and working in Reydon will be opening their studios as part of Southwold Arts Festival. The Open Studio Trail takes place on Saturday, 22nd and Sunday, 23rd June, from 11am to 5pm. A leaflet with full details of the Trail will be available in mid-May from Bridgefoot Stores, Reydon Village Hall, Southwold Library and many other businesses in the area.
Reydon Community Quiz – April and end-of-season 2023/24 Report
April saw the last Community Quiz for this season, and regular quizzer Brad took the role of question master, with a very enjoyable quiz featuring some fiendishly brain teasing questions!
In fourth place this month were ‘What the Ecc’ with 73 points; in joint second place ‘If Onlys’ and ‘Treacle Tarts ‘ with 80 points apiece; and winners this month ‘What, No Broadside?’ on 93 points.
Together with proceeds from the raffle, the evening raised £275. The work done by the Food Bank at the Methodist Church building in Southwold had been flagged up to us by one of their volunteers, so this month’s proceeds were donated to them, in support of the help they provide to our local community. (They are open Tuesday and Friday 2–4pm, and offer not just food but other support too, so pop in and see them if you can offer help or if you would like some support yourself.)
This season, we have raised and donated to £1,813 in total to local good causes, so many, many thanks to all who support our Community Quiz, it is hugely appreciated both by those who organise it and by those who are the recipients. What a wonderfully supportive community we are lucky to live in.
The next quiz will be held in October 2024, when the new season begins – we wish all our quizzers and supporters a happy summer. (When it arrives!) The dates of the autumn quizzes will be publicised nearer the time.

Art Sale

Works by the late Southwold artist Brian Bennett. Brian was a self-taught artist, becoming a serious painter in his mid-30s. He was the winner of the Ealing Open Art Competition , exhibiting widely in London and in Suffolk. Brian was a long-serving member of the Southwold Art Circle.
His earlier paintings were representational, but in Suffolk, he became interested in exploring surface textures, cracked wood, rusting metal, peeling paint on details of boats, doors, barns, fishing sheds and the like. This led in turn to the more abstract imagery of his later work.
Sale in aid of the Friends of Southwold Library.

The Read2Dogs scheme provided by PAT helps to improve literacy skills and wellbeing in young people by developing their confidence, interest and enjoyment in reading. Dogs are non-judgemental and great listeners – they don’t interrupt or correct – so they aid confidence and concentration levels. PAT Dogs are also known to encourage positive social behaviours, enhance self-esteem and inspire young people to relax and have fun. Come and read to Ash for up to 15 minutes at a time, plus enjoy a range of dog-themed games, jigsaws, and crafts while you wait.
