July news & events from Southwold Library
Talk by Nancy Stevenson, author of Beach Hut People
Monday, 15th July, 11am @ Southwold Library
Free event, no need to book.
Have you ever wondered about the people who choose to spend summer days in their beach huts in Frinton and Walton? Maybe youâve taken pictures of the huts and chuckled at their cheeky names? Perhaps youâve peeked inside their open doors? Possibly youâve paused and said hello to the people who are drinking tea outside? In her book Nancy Stevenson sets out on a journey to discover a little more about the people who inhabit these âsheds by the seaâ and the pleasures of a day at the hut.
âA charming snapshot of a slice of the British seaside, the humble beach hut, their occupants, and a tiny corner of Essex serving here as a brilliant microcosm for a larger story about our island nationâs idiosyncrasies.â Travis Elborough
âNancy Stevenson has stepped behind the familiar candy-coloured, bucket-and-spade world of the seaside beach hut to discover a much more profound relationship chalet-users have with the wide skies and careless pleasures of the seashore, and where the family hut is a precious repository of childhood memories, handed down from one generation to the next.â Ken Worpole
Come and listen to Nancy talk about her research, her book and the experiences of fellow beach-hut-loving areas just like Southwold!
Nancy will be signing copies of her book, Beach Hut People.
