Advance notice of road closure – Mount Pleasant, Reydon

We are planning to carry out carriageway repairs along Mount Pleasant, Princess Road and Moyse Avenue, Reydon.

The works are programmed to take place between 8am and 6pm on Wednesday, 9th April, Thursday, 10th April and Friday, 11th April. During this time, the road will be closed to ensure the safety of highway users and our operatives.

For the duration of the closure, traffic will be diverted via Covert Road, Coxes Lane and vice versa.

To enable us to carry works out as planned, we ask that local road users please move their vehicles from the area highlighted by ‘no parking’ cones.

As we plan roadworks in advance, we schedule extra days to allow for bad weather or other delays beyond our control. If we need to make major changes to our work dates, we will update the information signs on site and our social media channels accordingly.

A plan showing the diversion route for these works can be downloaded by clicking here. When we close the road and put a diversion in place, the route needs to be accessible to vehicles of all shapes and sizes. We make our diversions as clear as possible by placing appropriate signing along the route. The latest updates on our works can be found on the One.Network website.

There may be times that essential emergency works are required to take place on the highway network without advanced notice – you can follow Suffolk Highways on Facebook for the latest emergency roadwork updates.

If you have any queries on the above, please contact us on 0345 606 6171.

Reydon Community Quiz Report – March 2025

The March Community Quiz was held on 21st March, with Nick Humphry as quizmaster. As always, a lively evening ensued, with plenty of discussion, laughter and banter!

Winners were ‘If Onlys’ with 116 points; in second place, ‘Who are we?’ with 114 points; and in third place, ’Threes Company’ with 108 points.

Together with proceeds from the raffle, the evening raised a generous £325. This will be donated to the Reydon and Southwold Pantomime Group, who greatly entertained audiences with their recent and very entertaining version of Aladdin. This wonderful group entertains, gives members young and old the opportunity to perform, and raises money for local charities too. We wish them well for their next production.

A huge thanks as always to our loyal quizzers for their generosity, participation and support, to hosts Sole Bay Bowls Club and raffle helpers. Thanks also to Southwold Press for providing paper for the quizzes.

The next quiz will be on Friday, 18th April (Good Friday) and this will be the last of the season. There is sometimes space for another team, so do contact me if you are interested in joining us at ahumphry@talktalk.net.

Blyth Valley and Southwold Wildlife Group: March report

Barn owls and red kites

The Blyth Valley and Southwold Group of the Suffolk Wildlife Trust welcomed Simon Dudhill from the Hawk and Owl Trust to talk about his work with barn owls and red kites. Simon has worked for many years with owls and other raptors, monitoring their progress, and building nest boxes suitable for each type of bird. Owls don’t build their own nests, but rely largely on outbuildings and trees. The reduction of these habitats has meant that now 80% of barn owls use large oblong or triangular boxes, which you may well have seen. If a barn owl chick falls out of its box, it is in grave danger as its parents do not look for it or try to feed it. However, it is sometimes possible to foster a found chick by placing it in another carefully selected nest box. Simon and his colleagues monitor over 800 boxes in an area radiating out from Peterborough. They are licenced to check and ring the birds, and, happily, this species is now generally secure.

The second part of the talk was about red kites. Spain has asked the RSPB for help with its declining red kite population. Northamptonshire is highly populated with kites, and it is here that Simon, as part of a team, is finding chicks to help with this project. The scheme has been running for three years now and, so far, 96 chicks have settled into their new homes. The process is done with great care. Forestry England supplies experienced and licenced climbers who can bring chicks down to the ground. There is always one chick left in the nest, and the same nest is not revisited for three years. They are carefully and fully health-checked, ringed, and fitted with GPS trackers before their journey to their new habitat. They are now breeding successfully with local birds and rearing their young.

The photography was beautiful, and it was a fascinating and enjoyable evening.

Our next meeting is back at the Southwold Arts Centre IP18 6JP on Thursday, 10th April at 7.30 pm. There will be a short AGM followed by a film, The River Gipping, featuring Paul Heiney. There will be refreshments and a raffle. Admission free.
