Background

The first Reydon Scarecrow Trail was held in September 2010 to support fund raising for the Reydon Christmas Lights Appeal, and at the same time create a community event for the whole village. Having formed a small committee about 18 months prior to the first trail, the event was planned and publicised. The Scarecrow Committee was thrilled to have over 60 scarecrows entered, and to see the village full of local families and visitors alike enjoying the trail, many on foot or by bicycle. Just over ÂĢ1,000 was raised.

Due to popular demand, there was another trail in September 2011, this time with over 70 scarecrows, including a special competition for a children's hand-held scarecrow. Local artists were also involved, with open studios and an exhibition in the Village Hall. Even more people came to see the trail and the total raised was over ÂĢ1,800. After such success, the trail has become a popular village tradition with a number of trails being organised through the years.

About the Trail

The idea is simple, anyone who wishes to take part fills in an entry form in advance, then makes a scarecrow to stand outside their home (or, if preferred, in another location in the village) so it is visible from the road. The scarecrows are numbered by the Scarecrow Committee and a map produced. The map is sold locally prior to the event and at the Village Hall on the Scarecrow Trail weekend itself. The full trail takes three to four hours to walk round, so many people travel by bicycle, or view the scarecrows over two days. The Village Hall is open for tea, cake and light refreshments, and viewers are encouraged to vote for their favourite scarecrow.

When is the next Trail and how can I take part?
